Through community-led counselling, Myanmar Positive Group (MPG) continues to support individuals to overcome fear, rebuild confidence, and stay engaged in care—transforming lives and strengthening communities.
A Journey from Isolation to Support
When one individual learned about their HIV status, fear and uncertainty quickly led to withdrawal from family and community life. The experience was not only emotional, but also deeply affected their willingness to seek care and continue treatment.
At the same time, their family faced stigma and discrimination within the community, increasing feelings of isolation and making it more difficult to cope with the situation.
Recognizing the need for support, trained peer counsellors began engaging with the individual and their family through regular counselling sessions.
The Role of Peer Counsellors
Through consistent visits, counselling, and open communication, peer counsellors provided accurate information about HIV and helped address fears and misconceptions.
Their approach focused on:
- Building trust and understanding
- Providing clear and accessible health information
- Supporting treatment adherence
- Encouraging open communication within the family
Over time, this support created a safe environment where the individual could begin to regain confidence and feel supported.
Gradual Change and Improved Health
With continued counselling, the individual began to re-engage in care and started adhering to treatment more consistently.
As one peer counsellor reflected:
“We focus on understanding the challenges people face and working together to find solutions that fit their lives.”
This shift—from fear to understanding—helped improve both physical health and emotional wellbeing.
Strengthening Family and Community Support
The impact of counselling extended beyond the individual.
As the family gained better understanding of HIV:
- Attitudes within the household became more supportive
- Fear and misinformation were gradually reduced
- Family members became active supporters of care and treatment
The family also began sharing accurate information within their community, contributing to a reduction in stigma and discrimination.
This demonstrates how community-led counselling can contribute not only to individual health outcomes, but also to broader social change.
Breaking Barriers Through Trust and Knowledge
This experience highlights the key role of peer counselling in helping individuals overcome barriers such as:
- Fear of stigma and discrimination
- Lack of understanding about HIV
- Emotional distress and isolation
Peer counsellors, as trusted members of the community, are uniquely positioned to:
- Build meaningful relationships
- Provide culturally appropriate support
- Strengthen connections between individuals and health services
A Foundation for Long-Term Health and Wellbeing
Through sustained engagement and compassionate support, the individual was able to:
- Improve adherence to treatment
- Rebuild confidence
- Strengthen relationships with family and community
Today, they are able to maintain their health and look toward the future with greater hope and stability.
Why This Matters
This story reflects the broader impact of MPG’s community-led approach:
- Counselling improves treatment adherence and health outcomes
- Emotional and psychosocial support strengthens resilience
- Community engagement reduces stigma and discrimination
- Family involvement enhances long-term care and support
Moving Forward
MPG continues to strengthen peer-led counselling services to ensure that individuals receive not only medical care, but also the emotional and social support needed to thrive.
With sustained investment and strong partnerships, peer counselling will remain a cornerstone of efforts to build a more inclusive, supportive, and effective HIV response in Myanmar.
